Bicycle touring Germany

Scout

We saw the Alps for our first time. They began as a hazy outline in the distance (even so they looked majestic) and throughout the day became more distinct. We made the route to the infamous Fussen, home of Neuschwanstein Castle (the model for Walt Disney's castle), longer with a few extra unplanned detours. At the end of the day we had stretched a fortyfive kilometer route into seventy. It wasn't that bad-much of the day's ride had been along lakes and, near Fussen, we finally had our first clear view of the Alps. I was finally convinced-the Alps really did exist.

During the afternoon we stopped beside the River Lech to eat while two kayakers practiced on the river. I went to take a picture and while waiting patiently for a good action spot my camera shutter clicked by itself. It should be an interesting photo. I didn't even know if the kayaker was in the viewfinder. I was still focusing on the white water when it clicked. I would have to title it "anticipation."

The rural setting made for a relaxing ride. We would have been to Fussen sooner, but I got lost while following various bike routes. At one unmarked intersection I chose the best pavement. "I'm sure it's this way," I confidently told my skeptical riding partners. We sailed down a steep hill only to find a dead end at the bottom-in a blasted farmyard of course. I had a knack for finding those farmyards. It was a gift. It had to be.

The road was paved right to the doorstep. I couldn't believe it. No matter how hard I looked there didn't seem to be a way out except back up the long hill we had just descended. A grandmother and young grandson were feeding a pony. After I dutifully toured the farmyard they confirmed my fears. Sherry said it was all my fault and wanted me to ride her bike up too. Sharon thought she had a very good idea. Woe was me. Just call me Pathfinder.

Cresting one hill on the bicycle path we had a panoramic view of Fussen's two castles nestled against the Alps. The Forggensee filled the foreground, providing a spectacular first image of Fussen. No wonder Fussen was a favorite holiday destination. Even without the castles, the scenery was breathtaking. Sherry was relieved to reach Fussen after climbing many hills.

Bruno and Renate were our hosts, waiting outside for us to arrive. Talk about anticipation. The girls immediately informed them we would have been there earlier if it wasn't for their "Scout." Our accommodations were deluxe. We had an entire suite with our own kitchen, bathroom and combination living roombedroom. Luxurious. Renate brought us tea and cakes. We were getting spoiled. Sherry thought bicycle touring was pretty easy stuff.
