Loch Ken It was much nicer cycling when the sun was shining--even if those Irish had called it a soft rain. It still eventually soaked me whether it was soft or not. At Pinwherry we phoned ferry companies and found it cost £83 from Newcastle, England, compared with £100 from Aberdeen, Scotland. We changed course and headed south. Serene mountain road B7027 passed forests and small lochs. Newton Stewart was a busy little tourist stop well situated on the main route. Sitting on a green bench, watching the wide river flow placidly under a four-arch bridge, we licked vanilla ice cream with lemon and lime swirls. Scenic route A712 cut through the Galloway Forest Park. Mainly other tourists traversed the reservoir lake with a huge dam at one end and a tea shoppe at one side. Along Loch Ken peaceful conifers reflected in the calm water. Sharon found a delightful camp spot near a cascading waterfall and washed up in the rock basin the waterfall had carved. We pitched our tent on a ledge overlooking the lake and retired inside to avoid the pesky flies. |
