May 20 Saturday Bicycle touring Holland Breakfast was thin pancakes with two slices of bacon cooked into the middle. They even have peanut butter here -- it's quite reasonably priced, too. Sharon calls it grainy, instead of chunky. At home chunky is smooth with chunks of peanuts added. In Holland it is like they didn't blend it enough, so it is gritty. In France the peanut butter is blended too much, so it comes as a drippy soupy mixture. I didn't know peanut butter was so tough to make. Girard dropped us off at the black market. It is what Beverwijk is famous for in Europe. People ask, "Where are you from?" "Beverwijk." "Where's that?" "The Black Market." "Oh, the Black Market." It is the largest black market in Europe. They sell clothes from everywhere. Lots of outrageously priced American clothes. Italian leather coats. Cheap socks, underwear, cosmetics, antiques, collector things. Restaurants from Greece, Turkey, Indonesia, Israel, China. Veggies and fruit from everywhere. Rows of ethnic products and spices in big bins that smell great. For supper we had Sucade Lappen-- an extremely tender beef steak. It is dipped in a mixture and then slow-cooked for five hours. It is so tender I cut it with my fork. Ice cream and peaches for dessert. Went over to Dinika's to babysit the kids. I played ping pong and a game on the pool table with no pockets. There are two white balls, one with a black dot, and a red ball. One of the white balls is yours. You have to hit your white ball onto the other white ball and then hit the red ball. If you do, you get a point and get to shoot again. Tiny made cherry cheesecake that is heavenly. I like it better than the cheese cake at home. Must be different cheese. It is not as tangy. I decide that on the seventh day God created cheesecake. |
