Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson

Bicycle touring journals

September 18 Monday Bicycle touring Germany

Many types of mushrooms are in the forest. There are orange, white, brown, and black.

We had a leisurely bike ride to Pegnitz, Germany. Sharon's brother, Murray, coming over to play hockey in Germany doesn't arrive until tomorrow. We have Marcus and Icky's phone number, his old roommates from last season. We try to phone them, but there is no answer. They are at work we suspect. Pegnitz has a church with a huge clock tower. We ride our bikes around Pegnitz and accidentally come across Murray's old address.

As we're straddling our touring bikes curbside, a woman, Marianne, who lives across the street, comes over and says she thinks that someone else lives in Murray's old apartment now.

She invites us in to use her phone. These Germans sure are friendly! While we are drinking tea and eating chocolate-swirl marble cake Marianne is busily tracking down other people on the hockey team, trying to find out where Marcus and Icky work.

After much persuasion I get a picture of her and her husband at the kitchen table behind a vase of daisies.

Marianne's sleuth work has paid off - she has discovered where Icky works. Marianne gets her bike. We mount our fully loaded touring machines and follow her downtown to where Icky works in an optician store.

Icky is delighted and surprised to see us. Murray had told us that he would try to phone Marcus and Icky to let them know we were coming, but he mustn't have been able to reach them.

Icky is soon finished work. She takes us to their apartment around the corner (she and Marcus are getting married October 28).

Marcus arrives home from his construction job. They take us to his mom and dad's house. It has been determined that Sharon and I will be staying upstairs in Marcus's old bedroom. Once we are settled in, we all walk to a corner pub to enjoy Yugoslav food.

After supper and meeting all sorts of their friends, we return to the flat. From the top floor where we are staying, we overlook Pegnitz. There is a fine view from the upstairs bedroom window ... that is if it wasn't for the constant fog and haze.

Things worth the most in life are immeasurable.

Live your dreams.

Around the world on a bike in 780 days.

Dance wherever you may be.

Somewhere south of Hell.

What colour is your soul?
