October 7 Saturday sunny Bicycle touring Germany Sherry doesn't feel much like riding today. She says that her butt hurts, her legs are fatigued, and her knee is throbbing a bit. I told her the third day of bicycle touring is the hardest. I believe she's starting to see a pattern developing. The morning dawned foggy. We met Hermann as we rode past his place. He was on his bike riding down his driveway to pick up his mail. He said that was about as far as he ever wanted to ride a bike. Smart man. We biked up the hill and checked out some more sights in Rothenburg. We even pedalled through a drive-through church. Didn't see anyone to bless us though. In Rothenburg's town square, a market was set up, including a cider squeezing press with remains of apple peels and cores stuck in wooden pails. We rode our touring bikes out into the countryside. Sherry complains she is tired. Her knee hurts. After pedalling only 27 kilometres, we decided to look for a place to camp. We spotted some trees above a farm field. After biking up a lane, we pushed into some trees and set up the tent. Everything was peacefully quiet. Then a fellow in a 4x4 came along and stopped to gather up some wood. We could see him peering through the trees towards us, but he never came over or said anything. I found a tiny tick crawling on my pants and quickly dispatched it. I don't think Sherry was too impressed. She's kind of a Buddhist-type? The three of us snuggled into our two person Kelty tent. It is tight all right. We are shoulder to shoulder. As long as no one moves it is almost tolerable. But if someone wants to roll over, we all have to roll at the same time. I hope we don't have to do roll over thing too often. |
