October 13 overcast foggy Bicycle touring Germany We explored Munich, taking a cycling trip through the English Gardens. It seems slightly ironic that it is the largest English Gardens in Europe. There are lakes, swans, and lots of flowers and trees. Kilometres of walking and running paths and cycle paths crisscross the gardens. There are even beer gardens with rows and rows of picnic tables. There is a pagoda. How that fits into an English garden I'm not sure. From Munich's English Gardens, we cycled to the Deutch Museum of Science and Technology. I wasn't impressed. Half the displays were broken and didn't work when I pushed the button to operate it. The data was outdated. The computers were a sorry state with a couple non-stimulating examples. It certainly was the history of science and technology. This wasn't leading edge stuff like the advertisements make it out to be. I did enjoy looking at the old car displays though. We left the museum in time to get to see the Glockenspiel do its thing at 5 o'clock. It was a huge parade on two tiers that danced around the clock tower. My favourite were the knights jousting. On the first go around they just pass each other. On the second pass, one knocks the other one backwards off his horse. Classic! Since we're in Germany, we decided to go to an Italian restaurant. Ah, well. At least it will help get us prepared for bicycle touring in Italy. "Prego." We rode our bikes home in the dark. I used my bike light for the first time. I assure you, we were not the only ones out on the dark bike paths with Vista lights flashing. |
