October 19 Thursday sunny Bicycle touring Germany We thanked our German host family and hit the road for some early morning cycling. The cycling was easy but smelly -- through rolling stinky farm land. The Bavarians are really into natural fertilizer. We cycled along some small roads with minimal traffic. It was terrific and easy cycling. Went the wrong way again. Not exactly my fault this time though! A sign had been knocked down by some errant driver. When the sign was re-erected it pointed in the wrong direction! Sometimes it feels as though the bicycle gods are conspiring against one. We weren't too late though by the time we cycled up to our next host family destination. The mother, Margaret, is a teacher. Her husband is a lawyer. Anke, a daughter, was attending school in Bamberg. They had lots of Time magazines in English. I picked one up and flipped t open. I saw where Anke had gone through the articles one word at a time and had painfully highlighted and underlined words that she had to look up to learn its meaning. I read an article to her. She constantly stopped me to ask what words meant. It took a long time to read the article, but she was happy. She said it was a lot faster than having to look up the individual words on her own. As a reward for my diligent lesson, she kindly made us chocolate tea. |
