Bicycle touring journals

July 12 Tuesday Bicycle touring from Drumheller Alberta - Drumheller Alberta

Just after I arise it begins to rain and then it begins to pour. We are entertained briefly when the backhoe sinks down to the top of its tires in the gumbo trench. With some fancy maneuvering it is finally able to extricate itself -- resembling an enormous yellow insect with gangly legs as the operator repeatedly sticks out the pontoon legs on each side in an effort to grip the slippery earth.

We go to the Pancake House for breakfast, then cycle to the Info Centre to check if the campground past the Tyrrell Museum has a laundry. The word is they do, so off to the museum we go to enjoy the spectacle of dinosaur bones. The rain continues all day. There is a very long lineup to pay the entrance fee to get into the museum. I think people just want to get out of the rain and into someplace dry. We spend almost five hours there and still don't see everything. It is an amazing world class facility.

We cycle to Dinosaur Park RV Resort 5 kilometres west of the museum. For a hefty fee we are rewarded with a site right next to the stinky toilets. There is an outdoor heated pool but with all the lightning flashing around no one has had the poor judgment to venture in.

We do our laundry. Showers cost extra. It is still pouring. The lady at check-in says, in what is meant to be consoling, "This is the poopiest day we've had in a long time." Gee. Thanks. That makes me feel a lot drier.

There is a bunch of cyclists here with Tour Du Canada. They are cycling across Canada in 66 days. We talk to Tom, a cyclist from Toronto who got wiped out by a dangling detached trailer awning. As the trailer passed him the awning took him out at the ankles. He still has some stitches in his calf. It happened just outside of Revelstoke BC. The attending cop told him cyclists shouldn't be on the road anyway. How's that for keeping up with cyclists' road rights?
