September 2 Friday Bicycle touring from beside Lake Superior to Van Meer Michigan The checkout time is noon. We stayed right until the buzzer. Once you get touring cyclists inside, sometimes they appreciate it too much. We haul our loaded touring bikes out of the motel room and mount up. There are some good views of Lake Superior. There are many rest stops and scenic pull outs. We went through the town of Christmas. At Munising we got information from a ranger station about a gravel road that follows Lake Superior. It is not good news. The rain has made the road worse than usual. The ranger said that maybe mountain bikes could make it through, but touring bikes, he didn't recommend that we take the chance by riding out there. We talk to another ranger who assures us the gravel road is terrible. We ignore their advice and point our loaded
touring bikes towards Pictured Rocks National Seashore. It is
an area where different minerals have run together to create
colours on the cliffs. There are flower pot structures also,
with giant trees sticking out of them. It is best to go on a
boat tour, but we get the general idea from shore. |
