Bicycle touring journals

September 4 Sunday Bicycle touring from Mackinac Island Michigan to Black Lake Michigan

I went to sleep at 8:30 PM and got up this morning at 8:30. Pedalling a fully loaded touring bike all day can make one plenty tired. We ate breakfast at a scenic roadside stop overlooking Lake Michigan with a lighthouse on an island in the distance.

In St Ignace, we have to cross the five-mile long Mackinaw Bridge. Bicycles are not allowed on the bridge. For a dollar each, a pickup truck is dispatched by the bridge authorities and shuttles us and our touring bikes across. The driver tells us that Mackinaw City is fudge capital USA. They call the tourist "Fudgies." Even the radio station's call letters are FGE.

We have been making slow progress on our bicycle tour today, bucking a strong headwind all day. We hit Hwy 23 and then cycled along Lake Huron. At a mill we cycle onto an abandoned railroad track that has been turned into a rails to trails for a few miles. It is nice to get away from the cars and wind, but the cycling is slow. It is mainly sand and loose gravel. I had another flat.

At Cheboygan we take F05 and cycle south to Black Lake. We take our tiny bicycle camping tent and set up in the woods. Our only disturbance is a family out picking wild mushrooms. Later, we hear some fireworks. Lots of adventures occur on a bicycle touring holiday.
