October 2 Sunday Bicycle touring from Orleans Ontario to L'Original Québec For breakfast we had eggs, bacon, and toast. Before we left, we oiled Devon's chain on his mountain bike, tightened his kickstand, and trued his rims. Come to think of it, I probably should have put air in his tires too, but I didn't think of it until after we had left. Dennis took a couple of pictures of us on our loaded touring bicycles and said he would sent one home to mom and dad for us. We cycled Hwy 34 along the St Lawrence River. Almost all of the towns we passed through were French. Even the signs were in French. Whenever people spoke to us, they used French first, then switched to English when we responded. The people we overhear talking, all use French. I am surprised at how prevalent it is. In L'Original, we stopped for the night. The campground was closed. A fella at a gas station insisted it was too cold to sleep outside. He told us we would get pneumonia. It is supposed to get down to 1º C. It is really chilly with the wind. My hands are frozen. No mosquitoes though. Ah, bicycle tourists are ever the optimists, eh? We found a picnic table next to a campground. The toilets were open. We finished supper as the sun set at 6:45 PM. It is almost dark now. We go over to a ball diamond and set our little bicycle tent up under a dugout's roof. |
