Bicycle touring journals

October 6 Thursday Bicycle touring from Deschaillons Quebec to Quebec City Quebec

We slept in, warm in our bicycle touring accommodation, then got up and had a leisurely breakfast of toast with peanut butter and jam.

I pedalled up the hill (well, mainly pushed), said good-bye and thank you to Maurice and Jacqueline. Maurice had told us plenty of stories the night before. One had been about when they owned a motorhome for five years and had traveled all over the United States with it. One night, in Florida, Maurice was wakened by a burglar. Somehow, the guy had managed to get inside their motorhome -- while they were asleep. The burglar took all the dishes that had been set on the table ready for breakfast and he also took Jacqueline's money from her purse. He did all this without waking either Maurice or Jacqueline. Then, when the burglar couldn't find Maurice's wallet, he decided to wake Maurice up. He prodded Maurice very gently, not wanting to wake Jacqueline, I guess. When Maurice woke up to find this bandit staring over him he screamed terrifyingly loud and woke up half the campground. The guy ran out of the motorhome and jumped over the fence that surrounds the compound, taking their dishes with him.

Maurice and Jacqueline also own a cottage in Florida and another one in the Gaspé. He must have made a suitcase full of money.

The wind was behind us as we got on our fully loaded touring bikes and pedalled down the road. The wind pushed us all the way to Quebec City. The sun was even shining. A definite warming trend. We got a campground site so we can leave our panniers and explore the city. It was outrageously expensive for a little piece of ground.

After setting up our bicycle touring tent and throwing our bicycle touring panniers inside, we cycled into Old Quebec -- ten kilometres away. It is the only walled city in North America. There are the most tourists I've seen in ages.

As we cycled along the road to Quebec City this afternoon, I stopped and took a picture of a fella tossing pumpkins into a wagon. There are mounds and mounds of big orange pumpkins in this area. Must be getting ready for Halloween.
