October 22 Saturday Bicycle touring from somewhere wet in Maine to Canaan Maine It was nice and warm last night. We found a spot under a picnic shelter in a community rec area. It was a bit windy and still drizzling in the morning, but mainly the wind is flinging the rain off of the leaves. Sharon lost a reflector from her handlebar end. We looked back at a store and around the laundromat, but no luck. Guess we could have lost it anywhere on our bicycle touring route. Maybe not even yesterday? We are cycling amongst some gorgeous coloured leaves. Orange oak, red maple, yellow birch. The terrain is rolling. In some place I can coast down one side and without pedalling too hard, I can cycle up the other side. In one area I stopped cycling long enough to take out the camera. I took a picture of three kids and their dog looking out a rain-streaked window at us. What are they thinking? Maybe it's better not to know. Not sure if we convinced them that bicycle touring is a great way to see the world. I took a picture of Sharon riding down a leaf strewn one-lane road. I took another picture of some red berries on a leafless bush. Just west of Canaan on Hwy 2 at George Lake Park, we ate at a picnic table. No one is around. There are cabins. A couple are open. We went inside one and spread out our things to dry and check over before our departure to Europe. Sometime later, we heard two guys come by. They were wondering how to rent the cabins. They left without discovering us. We are laying on the floor, listening to our short-wave radio and writing in our journals by light from our candle lantern. |
