October 24 Monday Bicycle touring from Newry Maine to just over the state line into Vermont Wahoo! We cycled across New Hampshire in one day. This morning we rode to a covered bridge and had breakfast. The bridge was built in 1872. There are wooden pegs instead of nails. Sunday River flows beneath it. I dropped a piece of cheese into the water and a dozen little fish came to nibble on it. We had lunch at Welsh's Restaurant in Gorham. The portion was too small and too expensive for hamburger helper that they euphemistically called American Chop Suey. You can't fool me. That was plain old macaroni and hamburger. We filled our gas containers with white gas at a hardware store for a buck each. There is a good bakery in town called "Loafing Around." We cycled a steep hill out of town and were rewarded with a magnificent view of the Presidential Range. The sky is clear, blue and sunny. I even had to put on my sunglasses. Most of the hillsides in this area have trees denuded of their summer coverings. We saw some great white birch bark stands. We bought a gallon of milk for $1.99. We cycled into Vermont as darkness fell. Passing a small forest, we pushed our bikes inside to a clearing. There are lots of trucks on the road. We walked a short distance on the Appalachian Trail. It looks interesting with hills and corners. Similar to bicycle touring, I always wonder what's around the next corner? |
