Bicycle touring journals

October 26 Wednesday Bicycle touring from Fischer covered bridge, Vermont to Sand Bar State Park Vermont

We had cold toes this morning. Our lightweight cycle touring sleeping bags combined with our lightweight cycle touring tent leaves a bit to be desired in the warm sleep department while on an autumn cycle tour.

It is overcast. We washed up at a McDonald's. Hate the food -- love the restrooms. Clean and hot water.

We cycled Hwy 15 along the Lamoille River through Wolcott. Lots of derelict cars and rundown houses; some houses have old satellite dishes. Then we cycled Morrisville to Johnson where there was a covered bridge called "Old School Road."

We cycled to Waterville which boasted three covered bridges. My favourite was "Kissing Bridge." We kissed and rode our fully loaded touring bicycles across. Sharon thinks the name is because it is a one-lane bridge and cars kiss together when they both approach from opposite ends at high speed.

There are two more covered bridges about five miles farther, but we would have had to backtrack after we saw them, so we decided we had to leave something for our next cycle tour in Vermont. We cycled route 109 to Jeffersonville and crossed a long covered bridge. At Fairfax I cycled across yet another covered bridge. Sharon stayed at the top of a hill and read. She said she had cycled across enough covered bridge for one day. So that's a total of seven covered bridges I cycled across today.

We cycle a high windy road to Milton. We buy groceries at Checkerberry Village then cycle to West Milton, still along the Lamoille River. This section made for great bicycle touring -- it had the most fantastic scenery along the river. Plus, there were no cars and downhills were fast and smooth. One doesn't get much better cycle touring conditions than that.

We cycled to Sand Bar State Park and set up our tent with a beautiful view of Lake Champlain.
