Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson

Bicycle touring journals

February 21 Tuesday Bicycle touring Italy Sardinia from Giant's Grave Sardinia to a beach past Porto Cervo Sardegna

Ice on our bicycle touring tent's fly this morning. It wasn't just my imagination that it was cold last night.

We packed up our bicycle touring gear and pedalled off. We had lunch on a beach near the port at Palau while looking across the clear blue waters toward La Maddalena Island where a US military base is. We are 25 kilometres from where we arrived on Sardinia from the ferry from Corsica a couple of months ago.

We cycled to Cape Orso where a wind carved rock resembles the shape of a bear. We cycled a road to a dead end (downhill, of course) and had to climb back up on our heavily loaded touring bikes.

At a crossroads, we pulled our touring bikes to a stop to check our map -- wouldn't want to go in the wrong direction again! We met Terri who was just picking up her kids from the bus when I stopped to ask directions. Her husband is stationed at the navy US post on Maddalena. She offered to buy us crunchy Skippy peanut butter from the naval store. We turn down her kind offer as it is getting late in the day and we still want to make some miles. I wouldn't want to get spoiled after just learning to do without peanut butter.

I got nipped by a dog in Palau coming out of a store. The dog was lying on the sidewalk and watched me intently with its devil slant eyes as I entered the store. When I came out a few minutes later, the dog came over and sniffed at my shoes. As I walked away he tried to bite me, but mainly got a mouthful of wool sock. That made me mad. Now dogs don't even like me when I'm not on my bike. Then, as we cycled past, the cur took another run at me, snapping and snarling. I sprayed him with Cayenne pepper. That stopped the mutt in his tracks.

The Smerelda coast is heavily populated. We barely found a place to pitch our little bicycle touring tent in a no camping area down towards the beach past Porto Cervo.
