Liberators! The crushed rock path became a single track through a farmer's field. We passed cows and sheep. I wondered who had right of way? Black and white cows looked like modern art to me if I peered at them really close. In Kampen, sailing ships were docked alongside the wharf. We found a picnic table with a view across the river to the town's buildings and clock tower. A family stopped at the bench next to our picnic table and the two kids came over to check us out. Sharon was making Chinese noodles and an amazing sweet and sour with pineapples, chicken and sauce. When she lifted the frying pan lid both children went "Mmmm." Their father told us Canadian veterans had marched in Kampen two weeks prior. Kampen is one of the Dutch cities liberated by Canadians during the second World War. At the old city gates there is a plaque commemorating the event. The clock tower wasn't attached to a church. It had been built in the olden times as a ruse to show how well-off the town was. People sailing past would surmise it was a rich town because of the huge expensive clock tower and would stop to trade.
