Bicycle touring Germany

Neuschwanstein

Our posh living quarters and beautiful surroundings persuaded us to spend another day in Fussen. On the way to Neuschwanstein castle we passed a long line of Japanese tourists. Pedaling past each they greeted us: "Good morning! Good morning!" Renate cycled with us to the castles, which Sharon and Sherry toured. I declined as usual.

After Sherry and Sharon toured the castle we walked the trail above the castle to the bridge. It had a wonderful side view of the castle showing off its many turrets and towers to their best advantage.

We went to the yellow castle, nestled in the valley, where Mad King Ludwig grew up. Sharon and Sherry took another tour while I checked out the sundrenched garden. The weather was perfect. Sunshine and no fog. Everything seemed more charming. Even the cows looked better in Fussen with their enormous fuzzy ears and shiny creamcolored coats. Against the emerald green pastures and towering Alps they were more like tourist attractions than farm animals.

Renate led us on a bicycle path along the Alpsee. The colors of the water and the position of the castles at the base of the lake provided yet another great view. We stopped to overlook one area, high above the lake where it was fabled that enchanting King Ludwig used to dive. No wonder they called him mad.

When we crossed the border into Austria there were two guard huts in the forest, one on each side of the border. Maybe it wouldn't have been so easy to slip into Czech after all. Since Germany and Austria had entered the European Union the huts were unmanned.

Renate's route led us into a valley at the foot of the Alps where we stopped to have lunch. After lunch Renate led us back to Fussen by a different route that was just as wonderful. Guided tours did have a lot going for them. We concluded our day with a tour of Fussen's buildings. Fussen was having its seven hundred year anniversary.
