Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson

Bicycle touring journals

July 23 Saturday Bicycle touring from Cypress Hills Alberta - Medicine Hat Alberta

We eat breakfast this morning at the info station where they have some new picnic tables. Around 10 we are ready to leave town. At the beach, we stop at the concession stand and fill our water bottles. Susan, Sharon and Vicky go for a long walk along the shore. I go to throw out last night's garbage. As I open the garbage can lid I am greeted with the sight of a pair of lacy black undies. Not wishing to pass up such a fine opportune moment, I liberate the risque darling and hang them off the back of Vicky's panniers. I am chuckling heartily to myself as we cycle through town, past gawking tourists. Then we are pedalling out on the open road. It is quite some before anyone in our little group notices my naughty addition. "Vicky?" Sharon asks. "What is that you have stuck to the back of your panniers?" Before I knew it, Vicky cycled up behind me and pinched my bum. Hard! Why did she ever suspect me?

We have a tailwind and are cranking along at a fast pace. The slight downhill doesn't hurt any either. It only takes us two hours to get back to the Dairy Bar in Medicine Hat compared to the five hours to pedal to Cypress Hills yesterday. Guess those downhills are easier, after all. And to think, I always thought it was psychological.

We average a bit better than 18 miles per hour. Our climb total for the day is a measly 150 feet. Half that is from when we had to ride out of our Cypress Hills camp spot. (And the other half was when we climbed back to Gas City campground.) What a difference from yesterday. Susan says she has never gone so far so fast. She just hung in the slipstream between our bikes and whooshed along.

We go back and set up at Gas City campground. Vicky gets a flat tire on the way there after running over beer bottle glass. Those little brown slivers of glass will cause you a hangover every time. Three flats, out of a trip total of four so far, have been in Medicine Hat.

We eat supper at our favourite place, Caroline's Restaurant. Then we go to another theatre to see The Client.

By the time we return to camp we are hot and sticky. Good thing they have free showers.
