July 24 Sunday Bicycle touring Medicine Hat Hoo boy. We missed setting our tent up in the morning shade by a whisker. By 7:30 AM it is already too hot to stay in the tent. It feels like a sauna and I emerge sweating copiously. I have a shower, then we go to Phil's Restaurant for breakfast. They make a great clubhouse sandwich. We tour more trails until it is time to go back to camp to get Sue to the airport on time. We spent some time out at a lake. Sharon, Susan and Vicky go for a dip while I read and watch the bikes. Even though it is the weekend, the trails still have only a few people on them. If this were Edmonton, the bikes trails would be packed. The other day, at the Dairy Bar, we met two cyclists. Later, riding to Echo Lake, we saw them again. Then, this morning, we pass them by the ball diamond. Medicine Hat is a small town with a population of 46,000 and two cyclists. Susan grabs a quick shower and we head to the airport. We turn her pedals and handlebars, get a bike bag and remove her front wheel as the airline requests. It is such a small plane, it has hardly any storage space. They didn't even charge her excess baggage for her bicycle like they usually do in the big city airports. The pilot stuck her bike into the tiny cargo hold beneath the belly of the plane. We wave goodbye to Susan, load our bikes onto Vicky's car racks and drive back to Edmonton with her. |
