February 14 Tuesday Bicycle touring Italy Sardinia from a sheep pasture past Bosa Sardinia to a free bicycle touring camp site on a ledge overlooking the sea in Sardegna Happy Valentine's Day, Sharon! We awake to the jingling of goat and sheep bells. The sky is black. It rained last night. It is cool, but it doesn't take long to break into a sweat when we begin climbing the coastal road on our fully loaded touring bicycles. We can't see much with the low lying cloud cover. We see an elderly gent waiting for the milk truck with his donkey and two silver milk cans. The donkey has a wooden holder on it back to carry the milk cans. The milk truck comes. One guy siphons the milk into a huge container on the truck while the other guy spreads some milk on an instrument, then holds it up to his eye to check it. A little late I'd say, since the farmer's milk has already been slurped into the large tank on the back of the truck. We cycle a ways farther and encounter some sheep on the road. The shepherd had waved to us half a kilometre back. As we approach the sheep they break into a run down the road like they usually do. We stop. A car comes along and we race by the silly sheep behind the car. This time the sheep stay put. We free camp on a small ledge three feet from the edge of a cliff. The sea is 300 feet below. That's the trouble with these small bicycle touring tents -- they fit almost anywhere. The sun came out and it was cooking. The sun set and it got chilly. |
